What exactly is chaos? The name "chaos theory" comes from the fact that the systems that the theory describes are apparently disordered, but chaos theory is really about finding the underlying order in apparently random data.

When was chaos first discovered? The first true experimenter in chaos was a meteorologist, named Edward Lorenz. In 1960, he was working on the problem of weather prediction. He had a computer set up, with a set of twelve equations to model the weather. It didn't predict the weather itself.

When he came back an hour later, the sequence had evolved differently. Instead of the same pattern as before, it diverged from the pattern, ending up wildly different from the original. (See figure 1.) Eventually he figured out what happened. The computer stored the numbers to six decimal places in its memory. To save paper, he only had it print out three decimal places. In the original sequence, the number was .506127, and he had only typed the first three digits, .506. By all conventional ideas of the time, it should have worked. He should have gotten a sequence very close to the original sequence. A scientist considers himself lucky if he can get measurements with accuracy to three decimal places. Surely the fourth and fifth, impossible to measure using reasonable methods, can't have a huge effect on the outcome of the experiment. Lorenz proved this idea wrong.

This effect came to be known as the butterfly effect. The amount of difference in the starting points of the two curves is so small that it is comparable to a butterfly flapping its wings.

The flapping of a single butterfly's wing today produces a tiny change in the state of the atmosphere. Over a period of time, what the atmosphere actually does diverges from what it would have done. So, in a month's time, a tornado that would have devastated the Indonesian coast doesn't happen. Or maybe one that wasn't going to happen, does. (Ian Stewart, Does God Play Dice? The Mathematics of Chaos, pg. 141)

This phenomenon, common to chaos theory, is also known as sensitive dependence on initial conditions. Just a small change in the initial conditions can drastically change the long-term behavior of a system. Such a small amount of difference in a measurement might be considered experimental noise, background noise, or an inaccuracy of the equipment. Such things are impossible to avoid in even the most isolated lab. With a starting number of 2, the final result can be entirely different from the same system with a starting value of 2.000001. It is simply impossible to achieve this level of accuracy - just try and measure something to the nearest millionth of an inch!

From this idea, Lorenz stated that it is impossible to predict the weather accurately. However, this discovery led Lorenz on to other aspects of what eventually came to be known as chaos theory. Lorenz started to look for a simpler system that had sensitive dependence on initial conditions. His first discovery had twelve equations, and he wanted a much more simple version that still had this attribute. He took the equations for convection, and stripped them down, making them unrealistically simple. The system no longer had anything to do with convection, but it did have sensitive dependence on its initial conditions, and there were only three equations this time. Later, it was discovered that his equations precisely described a water wheel.

At the top, water drips steadily into containers hanging on the wheel's rim. Each container drips steadily from a small hole. If the stream of water is slow, the top containers never fill fast enough to overcome friction, but if the stream is faster, the weight starts to turn the wheel. The rotation might become continuous. Or if the stream is so fast that the heavy containers swing all the way around the bottom and up the other side, the wheel might then slow, stop, and reverse its rotation, turning first one way and then the other. (James Gleick, Chaos - Making a New Science, pg. 29)

The equations for this system also seemed to give rise to entirely random behavior. However, when he graphed it, a surprising thing happened. The output always stayed on a curve, a double spiral. There were only two kinds of order previously known: a steady state, in which the variables never change, and periodic behavior, in which the system goes into a loop, repeating itself indefinitely. Lorenz's equations were definitely ordered - they always followed a spiral. They never settled down to a single point, but since they never repeated the same thing, they weren't periodic either. He called the image he got when he graphed the equations the Lorenz attractor.

In 1963, Lorenz published a paper describing what he had discovered. He included the unpredictability of the weather, and discussed the types of equations that caused this type of behavior. Unfortunately, the only journal he was able to publish in was a meteorological journal, because he was a meteorologist, not a mathematician or a physicist. As a result, Lorenz's discoveries weren't acknowledged until years later, when they were rediscovered by others. Lorenz had discovered something revolutionary; now he had to wait for someone to discover him.

Another system in which sensitive dependence on initial conditions is evident is the flip of a coin. There are two variables in a flipping coin: how soon it hits the ground, and how fast it is flipping. Theoretically, it should be possible to control these variables entirely and control how the coin will end up. In practice, it is impossible to control exactly how fast the coin flips and how high it flips. It is possible to put the variables into a certain range, but it is impossible to control it enough to know the final results of the coin toss.

A similar problem occurs in ecology, and the prediction of biological populations. The equation would be simple if population just rises indefinitely, but the effect of predators and a limited food supply make this equation incorrect. The simplest equation that takes this into account is the following:

next year's population = r * this year's population * (1 - this year's population)

In this equation, the population is a number between 0 and 1, where 1 represents the maximum possible population and 0 represents extinction. R is the growth rate. The question was, how does this parameter affect the equation? The obvious answer is that a high growth rate means that the population will settle down at a high population, while a low growth rate means that the population will settle down to a low number. This trend is true for some growth rates, but not for every one.

One biologist, Robert May, decided to see what would happen to the equation as the growth rate value changes. At low values of the growth rate, the population would settle down to a single number. For instance, if the growth rate value is 2.7, the population will settle down to .6292. As the growth rate increased, the final population would increase as well. Then, something weird happened.

As soon as the growth rate passed 3, the line broke in two. Instead of settling down to a single population, it would jump between two different populations. It would be one value for one year, go to another value the next year, then repeat the cycle forever. Raising the growth rate a little more caused it to jump between four different values. As the parameter rose further, the line bifurcated (doubled) again. The bifurcations came faster and faster until suddenly, chaos appeared. Past a certain growth rate, it becomes impossible to predict the behavior of the equation. However, upon closer inspection, it is possible to see white strips. Looking closer at these strips reveals little windows of order, where the equation goes through the bifurcations again before returning to chaos. This self-similarity, the fact that the graph has an exact copy of itself hidden deep inside, came to be an important aspect of chaos.

An employee of IBM, Benoit Mandelbrot was a mathematician studying this self-similarity. One of the areas he was studying was cotton price fluctuations. No matter how the data on cotton prices was analyzed, the results did not fit the normal distribution. Mandelbrot eventually obtained all of the available data on cotton prices, dating back to 1900. When he analyzed the data with IBM's computers, he noticed an astonishing fact:

The numbers that produced aberrations from the point of view of normal distribution produced symmetry from the point of view of scaling. Each particular price change was random and unpredictable. But the sequence of changes was independent on scale: curves for daily price changes and monthly price changes matched perfectly. Incredibly, analyzed Mandelbrot's way, the degree of variation had remained constant over a tumultuous sixty-year period that saw two World Wars and a depression. (James Gleick, Chaos - Making a New Science, pg. 86)

Mandelbrot analyzed not only cotton prices, but many other phenomena as well. At one point, he was wondering about the length of a coastline. A map of a coastline will show many bays. However, measuring the length of a coastline off a map will miss minor bays that were too small to show on the map. Likewise, walking along the coastline misses microscopic bays in between grains of sand. No matter how much a coastline is magnified, there will be more bays visible if it is magnified more.

One mathematician, Helge von Koch, captured this idea in a mathematical construction called the Koch curve. To create a Koch curve, imagine an equilateral triangle. To the middle third of each side, add another equilateral triangle.

Keep on adding new triangles to the middle part of each side, and the result is a Koch curve. A magnification of the Koch curve looks exactly the same as the original. It is another self-similar figure.

The Koch curve brings up an interesting paradox. Each time new triangles are added to the figure, the length of the line gets longer. However, the inner area of the Koch curve remains less than the area of a circle drawn around the original triangle. Essentially, it is a line of infinite length surrounding a finite area.

To get around this difficulty, mathematicians invented fractal dimensions. Fractal comes from the word fractional. The fractal dimension of the Koch curve is somewhere around 1.26. A fractional dimension is impossible to conceive, but it does make sense. The Koch curve is rougher than a smooth curve or line, which has one dimension. Since it is rougher and more crinkly, it is better at taking up space. However, it's not as good at filling up space as a square with two dimensions is, since it doesn't really have any area. So it makes sense that the dimension of the Koch curve is somewhere in between the two.

Fractal has come to mean any image that displays the attribute of self-similarity. The bifurcation diagram of the population equation is fractal. The Lorenz Attractor is fractal. The Koch curve is fractal.

During this time, scientists found it very difficult to get work published about chaos. Since they had not yet shown the relevance to real-world situations, most scientists did not think the results of experiments in chaos were important. As a result, even though chaos is a mathematical phenomenon, most of the research into chaos was done by people in other areas, such as meteorology and ecology. The field of chaos sprouted up as a hobby for scientists working on problems that maybe had something to do with it.

Later, a scientist by the name of Feigenbaum was looking at the bifurcation diagram again. He was looking at how fast the bifurcations come. He discovered that they come at a constant rate. He calculated it as 4.669. In other words, he discovered the exact scale at which it was self-similar. Make the diagram 4.669 times smaller, and it looks like the next region of bifurcations. He decided to look at other equations to see if it was possible to determine a scaling factor for them as well. Much to his surprise, the scaling factor was exactly the same. Not only was this complicated equation displaying regularity, the regularity was exactly the same as a much simpler equation. He tried many other functions, and they all produced the same scaling factor, 4.669. This was a revolutionary discovery. He had found that a whole class of mathematical functions behaved in the same, predictable way. This universality would help other scientists easily analyze chaotic equations. Universality gave scientists the first tools to analyze a chaotic system. Now they could use a simple equation to predict the outcome of a more complex equation. Many scientists were exploring equations that created fractal equations. The most famous fractal image is also one of the most simple. It is known as the Mandelbrot set.

The equation is simple: z=z2+c. To see if a point is part of the Mandelbrot set, just take a complex number z. Square it, then add the original number. Square the result, then add the original number. Repeat that ad infinitum, and if the number keeps on going up to infinity, it is not part of the Mandelbrot set. If it stays down below a certain level, it is part of the Mandelbrot set. The Mandelbrot set is the innermost section of the picture, and each different shade of gray represents how far out that particular point is. One interesting feature of the Mandelbrot set is that the circular humps match up to the bifurcation graph. The Mandelbrot fractal has the same self-similarity seen in the other equations. In fact, zooming in deep enough on a Mandelbrot fractal will eventually reveal an exact replica of the Mandelbrot set, perfect in every detail.

Fractal structures have been noticed in many real-world areas, as well as in mathematician's minds. Blood vessels branching out further and further, the branches of a tree, the internal structure of the lungs, graphs of stock market data, and many other real-world systems all have something in common: they are all self-similar.

Scientists at UC Santa Cruz found chaos in a dripping water faucet. By recording a dripping faucet and recording the periods of time, they discovered that at a certain flow velocity, the dripping no longer occurred at even times. When they graphed the data, they found that the dripping did indeed follow a pattern.

The human heart also has a chaotic pattern. The time between beats does not remain constant; it depends on how much activity a person is doing, among other things. Under certain conditions, the heartbeat can speed up. Under different conditions, the heart beats erratically. It might even be called a chaotic heartbeat. The analysis of a heartbeat can help medical researchers find ways to put an abnormal heartbeat back into a steady state, instead of uncontrolled chaos.

Researchers discovered a simple set of three equations that graphed a fern. This started a new idea - perhaps DNA encodes not exactly where the leaves grow, but a formula that controls their distribution. DNA, even though it holds an amazing amount of data, could not hold all of the data necessary to determine where every cell of the human body goes. However, by using fractal formulas to control how the blood vessels branch out and the nerve fibers get created, DNA has more than enough information. It has even been speculated that the brain itself might be organized somehow according to the laws of chaos.

Chaos even has applications outside of science. Computer art has become more realistic through the use of chaos and fractals. Now, with a simple formula, a computer can create a beautiful, and realistic tree. Instead of following a regular pattern, the bark of a tree can be created according to a formula that almost, but not quite, repeats itself.

Music can be created using fractals as well. Using the Lorenz attractor, Diana S. Dabby, a graduate student in electrical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has created variations of musical themes. ("Bach to Chaos: Chaotic Variations on a Classical Theme", Science News, Dec. 24, 1994) By associating the musical notes of a piece of music like Bach's Prelude in C with the x coordinates of the Lorenz attractor, and running a computer program, she has created variations of the theme of the song. Most musicians who hear the new sounds believe that the variations are very musical and creative.

Who has the best possible method of time management? Believe it or not it may possibility be me. Or at least until I find one with a better plan. How I manage time is to not waste any "Time". Every location I'm at is a learning process. I have different areas I'm at throughout the day is a learning environment. Since I don't drive anymore or I'm not supposed to; is when traveling I'm reading or talking to someone about business. That could be on an airplane, auto or anywhere is learning time. I don't waste time because time is the only period none of us have enough of! Yes even in the bathroom. Sorry had to tell you that, this is my personal time line.

No television either unless a few minutes of catching up on the news. I may be reading though with one ear on the daily news. Now, I do have to elaborate a little on what I read. When in my truck while riding because I did say, I don't drive. I'll leave some reading materials in the truck that may be some long term reading items. This could be a book I've been reading for months. In other words my brain tunes into the reading time frame I've assigned for a long-term educational piece. This time could also be an article of the day I brought with me so it could be an immediate thing I need to know about.

There's one time I don't read of coarse that is in the shower. Now when on the you know what, that's another place where some long-term book is laying or another quick article. The most creative time frame I use is believe it or not, is when I'm running. I've learned that from Lance Winslow. That's what he does. Or sometimes Sean Mize or even Fabian Tan. The last two I don't know if they run or not but they are a good source to learn stuff from.

My long-term reading is something I have to really think about, you know you the material that has to sink in; the stuff that you'll have to read a few sentence's at a time. The works of long ago like Aristotle, Socrates and Plato. Modern times will be Bob Proctor or Mr. Trump. Phone calls may be screened because their constantly ringing. The phone is a perfect time for delegation and not duplication!

Since this is the age of computers now, I do spend a lot of time on the computer. Of coarse laptops now, that goes everywhere. Lap time to me is what's laying in my lap in between times I'm waiting for the computer's hour glass to fill. That could also be when on vacation or any of the riding places I've all ready mentioned. I did fail to mention my hours are not for everyone. My days are 18 to 20 hours long, unless I'm sick. Seven days a week or coarse. However, being sick is very unusual and rare in my case because I'm a runner! Runners have an extremely strong immune system. 15. Chaos Theory

When was chaos first discovered? The first true experimenter in chaos was a meteorologist, named Edward Lorenz. In 1960, he was working on the problem of weather prediction. He had a computer set up, with a set of twelve equations to model the weather. It didn't predict the weather itself. However this computer program did theoretically predict what the weather might be. One day in 1961, he wanted to see a particular sequence again. To save time, he started in the middle of the sequence, instead of the beginning. He entered the number off his printout and left to let it run.

This effect came to be known as the butterfly effect. The amount of difference in the starting points of the two curves is so small that it is comparable to a butterfly flapping its wings. The flapping of a single butterfly's wing today produces a tiny change in the state of the atmosphere. Over a period of time, what the atmosphere actually does diverges from what it would have done. So, in a month's time, a tornado that would have devastated the Indonesian coast doesn't happen. Or maybe one that wasn't going to happen, does. (Ian Stewart, Does God Play Dice? The Mathematics of Chaos.

This phenomenon, common to chaos theory, is also known as sensitive dependence on initial conditions. Just a small change in the initial conditions can drastically change the long-term behavior of a system. Such a small amount of difference in a measurement might be considered experimental noise, background noise, or an inaccuracy of the equipment. Such things are impossible to avoid in even the most isolated lab. With a starting number of 2, the final result can be entirely different from the same system with a starting value of 2.000001. It is simply impossible to achieve this level of accuracy - just try and measure something to the nearest millionth of an inch!

From this idea, Lorenz stated that it is impossible to predict the weather accurately. However, this discovery led Lorenz on to other aspects of what eventually came to be known as chaos theory. Lorenz started to look for a simpler system that had sensitive dependence on initial conditions. His first discovery had twelve equations, and he wanted a much more simple version that still had this attribute. He took the equations for convection, and stripped them down, making them unrealistically simple. The system no longer had anything to do with convection, but it did have sensitive dependence on its initial conditions, and there were only three equations this time. Later, it was discovered that his equations precisely described a water wheel.

At the top, water drips steadily into containers hanging on the wheel's rim. Each container drips steadily from a small hole. If the stream of water is slow, the top containers never fill fast enough to overcome friction, but if the stream is faster, the weight starts to turn the wheel. The rotation might become continuous. Or if the stream is so fast that the heavy containers swing all the way around the bottom and up the other side, the wheel might then slow, stop, and reverse its rotation, turning first one way and then the other. The equations for this system also seemed to give rise to entirely random behavior. However, when he graphed it, a surprising thing happened. The output always stayed on a curve, a double spiral. There were only two kinds of order previously known: a steady state, in which the variables never change, and periodic behavior, in which the system goes into a loop, repeating itself indefinitely. Lorenz's equations were definitely ordered - they always followed a spiral. They never settled down to a single point, but since they never repeated the same thing, they weren't periodic either. He called the image he got when he graphed the equations the Lorenz attractor.

In 1963, Lorenz published a paper describing what he had discovered. He included the unpredictability of the weather, and discussed the types of equations that caused this type of behavior. Unfortunately, the only journal he was able to publish in was a meteorological journal, because he was a meteorologist, not a mathematician or a physicist. As a result, Lorenz's discoveries weren't acknowledged until years later, when they were rediscovered by others. Lorenz had discovered something revolutionary; now he had to wait for someone to discover him.

Another system in which sensitive dependence on initial conditions is evident is the flip of a coin. There are two variables in a flipping coin: how soon it hits the ground, and how fast it is flipping. Theoretically, it should be possible to control these variables entirely and control how the coin will end up. In practice, it is impossible to control exactly how fast the coin flips and how high it flips. It is possible to put the variables into a certain range, but it is impossible to control it enough to know the final results of the coin toss.

A similar problem occurs in ecology, and the prediction of biological populations. The equation would be simple if population just rises indefinitely, but the effect of predators and a limited food supply make this equation incorrect. The simplest equation that takes this into account is the following: next year's population = r * this year's population * (1 - this year's population)

In this equation, the population is a number between 0 and 1, where 1 represents the maximum possible population and 0 represents extinction. R is the growth rate. The question was, how does this parameter affect the equation? The obvious answer is that a high growth rate means that the population will settle down at a high population, while a low growth rate means that the population will settle down to a low number. This trend is true for some growth rates, but not for every one.

One biologist, Robert May, decided to see what would happen to the equation as the growth rate value changes. At low values of the growth rate, the population would settle down to a single number. For instance, if the growth rate value is 2.7, the population will settle down to .6292. As the growth rate increased, the final population would increase as well. Then, something weird happened.

As soon as the growth rate passed 3, the line broke in two. Instead of settling down to a single population, it would jump between two different populations. It would be one value for one year, go to another value the next year, then repeat the cycle forever. Raising the growth rate a little more caused it to jump between four different values. As the parameter rose further, the line bifurcated (doubled) again. The bifurcations came faster and faster until suddenly, chaos appeared. Past a certain growth rate, it becomes impossible to predict the behavior of the equation. However, upon closer inspection, it is possible to see white strips. Looking closer at these strips reveals little windows of order, where the equation goes through the bifurcations again before returning to chaos. This self-similarity, the fact that the graph has an exact copy of itself hidden deep inside, came to be an important aspect of chaos.

An employee of IBM, Benoit Mandelbrot was a mathematician studying this self-similarity. One of the areas he was studying was cotton price fluctuations. No matter how the data on cotton prices was analyzed, the results did not fit the normal distribution. Mandelbrot eventually obtained all of the available data on cotton prices, dating back to 1900. When he analyzed the data with IBM's computers, he noticed an astonishing fact: The numbers that produced aberrations from the point of view of normal distribution produced symmetry from the point of view of scaling. Each particular price change was random and unpredictable. But the sequence of changes was independent on scale: curves for daily price changes and monthly price changes matched perfectly. Incredibly, analyzed Mandelbrot's way, the degree of variation had remained constant over a tumultuous sixty-year period that saw two World Wars and a depression. Mandelbrot analyzed not only cotton prices, but many other phenomena as well. At one point, he was wondering about the length of a coastline. A map of a coastline will show many bays. However, measuring the length of a coastline off a map will miss minor bays that were too small to show on the map. Likewise, walking along the coastline misses microscopic bays in between grains of sand. No matter how much a coastline is magnified, there will be more bays visible if it is magnified more.

One mathematician, Helge von Koch, captured this idea in a mathematical construction called the Koch curve. To create a Koch curve, imagine an equilateral triangle. To the middle third of each side, add another equilateral triangle. Keep on adding new triangles to the middle part of each side, and the result is a Koch curve. A magnification of the Koch curve looks exactly the same as the original. It is another self-similar figure. The Koch curve brings up an interesting paradox. Each time new triangles are added to the figure, the length of the line gets longer. However, the inner area of the Koch curve remains less than the area of a circle drawn around the original triangle. Essentially, it is a line of infinite length surrounding a finite area. To get around this difficulty, mathematicians invented fractal dimensions. Fractal comes from the word fractional. The fractal dimension of the Koch curve is somewhere around 1.26. A fractional dimension is impossible to conceive, but it does make sense. The Koch curve is rougher than a smooth curve or line, which has one dimension. Since it is rougher and more crinkly, it is better at taking up space. However, it's not as good at filling up space as a square with two dimensions is, since it doesn't really have any area. So it makes sense that the dimension of the Koch curve is somewhere in between the two.

Fractal has come to mean any image that displays the attribute of self-similarity. The bifurcation diagram of the population equation is fractal. The Lorenz Attractor is fractal. The Koch curve is fractal. During this time, scientists found it very difficult to get work published about chaos. Since they had not yet shown the relevance to real-world situations, most scientists did not think the results of experiments in chaos were important. As a result, even though chaos is a mathematical phenomenon, most of the research into chaos was done by people in other areas, such as meteorology and ecology. The field of chaos sprouted up as a hobby for scientists working on problems that maybe had something to do with it. Later, a scientist by the name of Feigenbaum was looking at the bifurcation diagram again. He was looking at how fast the bifurcations come. He discovered that they come at a constant rate. He calculated it as 4.669. In other words, he discovered the exact scale at which it was self-similar. Make the diagram 4.669 times smaller, and it looks like the next region of bifurcations. He decided to look at other equations to see if it was possible to determine a scaling factor for them as well. Much to his surprise, the scaling factor was exactly the same. Not only was this complicated equation displaying regularity, the regularity was exactly the same as a much simpler equation. He tried many other functions, and they all produced the same scaling factor, 4.669. This was a revolutionary discovery. He had found that a whole class of mathematical functions behaved in the same, predictable way. This universality would help other scientists easily analyze chaotic equations. Universality gave scientists the first tools to analyze a chaotic system. Now they could use a simple equation to predict the outcome of a more complex equation. Many scientists were exploring equations that created fractal equations. The most famous fractal image is also one of the most simple. It is known as the Mandelbrot set.

The equation is simple: z=z2+c. To see if a point is part of the Mandelbrot set, just take a complex number z. Square it, then add the original number. Square the result, then add the original number. Repeat that ad infinitum, and if the number keeps on going up to infinity, it is not part of the Mandelbrot set. If it stays down below a certain level, it is part of the Mandelbrot set. The Mandelbrot set is the innermost section of the picture, and each different shade of gray represents how far out that particular point is. One interesting feature of the Mandelbrot set is that the circular humps match up to the bifurcation graph. The Mandelbrot fractal has the same self-similarity seen in the other equations. In fact, zooming in deep enough on a Mandelbrot fractal will eventually reveal an exact replica of the Mandelbrot set, perfect in every detail. Fractal structures have been noticed in many real-world areas, as well as in mathematician's minds. Blood vessels branching out further and further, the branches of a tree, the internal structure of the lungs, graphs of stock market data, and many other real-world systems all have something in common: they are all self-similar. Scientists at UC Santa Cruz found chaos in a dripping water faucet. By recording a dripping faucet and recording the periods of time, they discovered that at a certain flow velocity, the dripping no longer occurred at even times. When they graphed the data, they found that the dripping did indeed follow a pattern. The human heart also has a chaotic pattern. The time between beats does not remain constant; it depends on how much activity a person is doing, among other things. Under certain conditions, the heartbeat can speed up. Under different conditions, the heart beats erratically. It might even be called a chaotic heartbeat. The analysis of a heartbeat can help medical researchers find ways to put an abnormal heartbeat back into a steady state, instead of uncontrolled chaos.

Researchers discovered a simple set of three equations that graphed a fern. This started a new idea - perhaps DNA encodes not exactly where the leaves grow, but a formula that controls their distribution. DNA, even though it holds an amazing amount of data, could not hold all of the data necessary to determine where every cell of the human body goes. However, by using fractal formulas to control how the blood vessels branch out and the nerve fibers get created, DNA has more than enough information. It has even been speculated that the brain itself might be organized somehow according to the laws of chaos. Chaos even has applications outside of science. Computer art has become more realistic through the use of chaos and fractals. Now, with a simple formula, a computer can create a beautiful, and realistic tree. Instead of following a regular pattern, the bark of a tree can be created according to a formula that almost, but not quite, repeats itself.

Music can be created using fractals as well. Using the Lorenz attractor, Diana S. Dabby, a graduate student in electrical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has created variations of musical themes. ("Bach to Chaos: Chaotic Variations on a Classical Theme", Science News, Dec. 24, 1994) By associating the musical notes of a piece of music like Bach's Prelude in C with the x coordinates of the Lorenz attractor, and running a computer program, she has created variations of the theme of the song. 19. Beginners First 5k Tips Online
One of the happiest accomplishments for a runner is to take on your first 5k run. The is quiet an accomplishment because a green runner has went from being a non runner to becoming fit enough to tackle this feat. You have graduated from being a "walk jog run or a run walking" type. You also have trained enough so you can run this distance without stopping. We will cover some basic questions here so you won't have to be spotted as a complete beginner!
Make sure you arrived at the race location at least one hour or two beforehand if you wish to find a place to park. You have practiced your running pace with some tempo running mixed with your race run pace over the last few weeks. Warm up about twenty minutes with some stretches and an easy mile is a good starting point. This is a big running tip for beginners here! Don't be carrying five pounds in your colon. Sorry we have to mention that, but this is a "racing tips" article. Start tapering your food intake a couple days before race date of your 5k run.
While you're warming up you should visualize a smooth and graceful run, in your mind. Run this race at your pace you have trained for and not that of other runners. The adrenalin will be pumping with all the excitement, music and all the people. Don't forget you did train for this pace for your first 5k run. The hardest thing you must not do, that is to go out at a too fast a pace. There is an old rule to remember here. For every second you go out above your race pace in the first quarter mile; you will have to give it back in the last quarter. Even though you warmed up it still takes time for your body to get adjusted to your race pace. It takes about a mile for your muscles to get stretched out.
You will get passed by many runners, but don't let that bother you. Trust me, you will pass some too! There will always be some that, this is their first 5k run too! There will be speedsters toed up on the starting line that will shoot off like a cannon! Don't be a victim to their pace! You can get some lighter running shoes, but that will be for you to decide. The lesser ounce shoes will have less support for your foot.
Make sure you don't over dress for this 5k run. There is another old rule to remember here. Dress enough to be comfortable after you have run for ten minutes. Let's say its 70 degrees outside. Dress for as if it were 80 degrees. Unless it is a hot day you can pass up your first water station. You will lose some seconds there. Don't waste time talking. Conserve your energy you will need it!
Anyone of these first 5k run tips is just a second or two here and there, but trust me again they will add up! So be proud of yourself. You are a winner just for showing up. You came from the running for beginner's ranks and your first 5k run will be the run to remember the most!

Allow me to paint a picture. A picture says a thousand words. I would speculate ninety percent of all people are what they are by no reason of choice. Let’s say a man catches fish for a living is he a fisherman? A person who banks for a living is he a banker?

One more. Is a singer of music a recording artist? You know the type if they don’t even need the accompaniment of a band. Do these hold the passion and pride of their art? I believe the answers to all these questions are obvious to the observer. You know when they are a gifted one…in the likes of a Cline Deon or Patsy Cline. In the world of golf it could be…the artistry of Tiger Woods. How about in the world of running. Passionate adult runners could be none other than Steve Prefontaine, Bill Rogers and Grace Kelly.

24. Runners's Focus

This is the moments just before the start of a road race at the starting line on a cool foggy morning in April. The other runners are all in their on little world of thoughts. Some are stretching; some are talking to the other runners. Me, I’m trying to not think about anything and just focus on the immediate task at hand. This always seems to work best for me.

Seems funny, now that I’ve run in over one hundred races I’ve come up with the “idea” I believe I will put my thought’s on paper! That thought alone makes me think about the guy waiting for the bus with his box of chocolates! Stupid is as stupid does!

What is on your mind? There are about two hundred runners here. All ages all races, male female, even some channel number 5! All doing their own little thing, the last minutes of preparation. They all believe their method is to work for them. For me it’s as if there is no sound! We wait for the gun to go off. And off we go, you can even smell the gun powder I no more than twenty feet away! They even have more noise than normal with all the extra hands far more than needed around the starting line.

This is the whole purpose, to find focus. We will capture the mind of a runner. What is going on between the ears, in their twenty minutes of thought on the course? I try to recapture all the weeks of training period just for this particular race. Though we all are trained runners of a few years at least. You still will find focus for a one particular race. Focus for one at a time.

You know you are well capable of running the course not only the speed you have trained, but the pace as well. Another thing you know you are well capable of the distance because this is a 5K and your weekly long runs have been a good nine miles or more!

The problem we run into these races is, we hear these little voices telling you can’t hold the pace up at this distance. You have the voices telling you to stop that your legs are on fire! Their burning too much in the final stages of the race! All you have to do is to stop and the pain will go away. Focus is what you will train your mind to override the thoughts. You can do this. What one man can do so can another!

It’s all about focus! Focus as a black belts signature roundhouse knockout kick! Focus as the employer that squeezes those last few interest points out of the payroll. They love it! It’s their kill! Focus diy is the surgeon’s last stitch of saving one more life! Focus as the pilot’s lock-on! Focus as a marathoner’s pace is working from his formula of his track repeats. When he’s learned his diet and nutrition is certainly an equal part in the equation. Focus of complete brilliance when his banked long runs pay off at the finish line...for all to see!

25. Is Long Distance Running Headaches a Problem

A runners headache problem you say, is there even such a thing? Well I don’t know, but I can give you my personal experience as a person who has had headaches everyday of my life since I suffered a concussion when I was nineteen years old. Number two running the exercise headache of the act didn’t bring it on.

What I have found headaches in running has not made any difference. If I’m fixing to go on a run and I have a headache I will take my pain medication. Because if I don’t I find my headache will get worse. I have actually experienced no form of running brought on the headache. Meaning no speed work, no distance, no temperate difference and nothing I ate made any difference. I have read some articles where other runner’s have experienced their encounters of runs bringing them on.

Headaches and the common cold has been a problem with man since the beginning of time. In prehistoric times they drilled a hole in the skull to let the evil spirits out! A migraine headache also known as a sick he ache usually comes on in periodic attacks. Fatigue headaches are said to come from overwork. Of course some sleep and rest should take of that. Another type of headache comes on to some people its call a hunger headache. These can often be cured by simply eating just a few crackers or some tea or even coffee. However in some people they have became so dependant on their fix of caffeine that when they don’t get their daily intake of caffeine, the lack of, actually brings a headache on. This is a vicious cycle that is hard to break. But, with a strong willpower this cycle can be broken over a few months by keeping a close eye on using less and less intake of caffeine in colas and coffee.

My primary experience has been muscle tension headaches. At least that is what I was diagnosed. Plus a combination of many others. Eyestrain can bring on a headache. Even if the prescription of your glasses may have gotten too weak for you can bring on a headache. Load noise can bring on headaches to some as well as anxiety and blood pressure just to name a few.

Believe it or not there are some people who have never had, not one headache in their entire lives! Boy! That’s a hard one for me to swallow! To people who have never had one, they can’t possibly understand what one is like? Can you imagine having a treating doctor who never has and your dependant on him to prescribe you your medication!

In closing we should always be on the lookout because headaches can be the symptom of a disease. Headaches can be the warning of meningitis, malaria, smallpox and typhoid. A few more warning signs of headaches can also be a signs of high blood pressure and kidney disease.

26. 1,001 Different Runner's
Many times throughout the days of a running-runner that runs, they’re on occasion asked this simple question. What type of a runner are you? Prepare yourself for a sit, if you ever ask that question to a runner! To the non-runner observer, what is the difference? Well, a runner in themselves can be quite a storyteller at times.
First I want to begin by process of elimination the kinds of runners we won’t talk about. To begin with we have the trail-runner. There is nothing any better than to go for a four to six-mile run through winding trails and forest on a cool breezy morning at the crack of dawn while many are still at their last hour of dreams.

Crossing over the stream and going up a rocky bank at the waters edge. A great work-out for your leg muscles because through trails and hills you will actually be calling on the many different muscle groups of your legs. You will call for those demands in a race.

You can always tell in a race who has been doing their hill work and who has not. Not good for a runner who lives in a town where the terrain is all flat. Then she goes out of town to another city on race day and the course turns out to be some of the steepest hills, the worst you have ever been on!

I think we’ve talked enough about trail-runners. Now we come to track-runners. Now I have nothing against track-runners but, to me there is nothing any more boring than to keep going around and around on the same piece of ground!

Using the track as a must. If you are going to be a long-distance-runner you will have to go to the track to do your repeats. I never said I didn’t go to the track. I just don’t like the track. If you want to win races you have to develop a love/hate relationship for the track.

The track is where you learn your paces. The track is where will perfect and hone-in on your speed. If I wasn’t running a race that weekend I would go to the track on Sunday’s. Sunday’s was my track day. I’ve done ¼ mile repeats all the way up to 3-mile repeats. It all depends on what type of race you’re preparing for.

I used ¼’s for 2-mile races and 3-mile repeats for the marathons. The repeats need to be done a little faster than your racing pace. This is the whole point! You’re introducing your body to the demands of your race pace, but you are breaking it up into segments.

On race day that’s where you put it all together. If you are a 5k runner and you’re running race pace average might be a 6:30 minute pace, then divide that time by four. In between the repeats my rest period would be the same time as my lap pace would be. I’ll mention it again because it is important. Lap pace a 1:15, then your rest 1:15, lap 1:15 then rest period. 1:15. etc., etc. There you go once more; your repeat laps would be one-minute and fifteen second repeats.

That comes out to about what kind of times you need to run in order win races in your age group. Check your Sunday papers to get an idea of what kind of times you need to run in your age groups. I’ll throw in a warning here, this information is my formulas that I trained by, that worked for me.

Probably most front-runners would tell you my formulas don’t work. Well they worked for me. I tried the book method. When I tried the book method I always found myself coming up short on race day which turned me into a hot-runner!

We have eliminated trail-runners and cross-country-runners. I put them into the same bag. We have eliminated track-runners. The next two runner groups we will eliminate are the extreme-runners and the ultra-distance-runners.

Now you may call these different groups different than what I did. But you get the jest of the idea! Finally we’ve gotten to our group of runners, the long-distance-runners. Believe it or not, a one mile-runner is called a long-distance-runner in this group of road-runners.

Kenyan-runners, world-class runners, elite-runners and of coarse the Olympics-runners are totally in a class of their own!

Unmentionables the women-runners, the nude-runners and the dog-runners we can’t forget none of them for they are just as important too!

I’m not the one who wrote the book of classifying different types of runners. I just abide by them like the other runners. I must mention one last thing for you. There is some lap over in cross-training that’s from the tri-athletes. to you!

One last point back to track-runners. They do run track races up to 3-miles. I suppose those are for runners who like to run long-distance, but not on the roads. They like to run on the soft surface of a track.

Is this all clear as mud? Now, please don’t come after me if I’m a little wrong on the track stuff, because I never raced on tracks myself other than my Sunday work-outs.

I did give you fair warning in the beginning of this say, that you may not want to ask a runner what type of a runner are you. Remember, you might need to prepare yourself for a sit if you ask that question! I’m the 101 year old marathon runner who was a buffalo-runner at one time too!

35. Running Tips
Pacing Tips for Runner’s Learning your paces means everything to a runner. A lot of variable’s come into play when we talk about pacing. Going out at the wrong pace wins and loses races. For every second you’re off your pace in the first quarter mile, you will have to give it back in the final quarter mile, just when you need it the most. A runner always thinks in terms of pace. I won’t get into times because each age group will vary. I’ll just give a rule of thumb because you will have to basically work out times for your specific age group. The four different paces all play a key role in the overall mix to be a top runner. One will be your long run pace. This is the one that’s most comfortable to you. Just add more miles to your long run each month. If you run 5k’s then you want to work your way up to twice what race distance, you want to run a race in. In other words your long run is want you will work your way up to six miles. If you want to run a 10k, then work your way up to twelve miles. . A tempo prepares you for race pace. It’s not as slow as the long run pace but not as fast as your race pace. Do one or two of these a week. Then once a week you will go to the track for intervals. You should do quarter mile repeats. Twelve of these at race pace with a minute or two in between for breaks. This prepares you for race day when you put it all together. Running is not like football where there is a certain time of year when it is for that sport. Each runner picks out their own running season. That’s because in general a runner that runs races, does not run full go at it, all year round. They will get burned out. It’s not very healthy either. All you should do in your off season is lengthening your long runs. Of course what pace you run, will depend on what age-group you’re in too! Age grouper’s in a runner’s world is divided in five-year age groups. Age groups would go something like this with: 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-45, 50-54, 55- 69, 70-74 up! Ending pacing tips for runner’s is the best racer’s come from the ones that specialize in one type of racing. That being a track runner or a long-distance runner or a trail-runner or a cross-country runner. Then even specialize even further; be a 5K runner or a 10K.runner! This will give you a rule thumb to go by. Because there are a hundred variables in between. Running is a very healthy pastime! You don’t even have to run races. I didn’t the first couple nor am I now. Running truly is a lifelong sport! I saw runners well into their eighties. I bet in our lifetime we will see runner’s into their hundreds!

36. Hang With The Beginning Runner's Crowd
This report describes on how to get from being in the beginning runners crowd to being a 4-mile runner in four months. If your not an active person and want to start an exercise program that’s where we will start. The easiest way for me to explain is just how I did it; thinking back some twenty years ago.
What inspired me one day after a regular long hard day at work; was to normally come in put my feet up on the coffee table with a beer in one hand and a cigarette in the other? Plus, I wouldn’t forget to get the kids to bring me the remote to the television!
I would say if anything inspired me to start thinking about my health better, was watching a sixty-two year old man running the Boston Marathon one day. He was as fit as any twenty year old athlete.
So my normal routine after work would be to putting on my running shoes and some shorts instead of hitting the couch. The first goal would be to just get around the block at a walk with no running. Each day I seen I was feeling a little better and even looking forward to each days walk.
By the end of the second week, I could get all the way around the block without stopping to a walk. Now I had already measured the distance off in my (half mile) car to see how far it was. It’s just a gauge for yourself if somebody ever asked; you would be able to answer them with an honest answer. About the same time this was going on, I managed to stop a twenty year smoking habit as well.

Better health became more important to me than the $1.50 a day pack of cigarettes. Ha! There is just no telling what they are costing these days! By the end of the third month I could run three miles without stopping! You will too! Remember you came from being in the beginning runner’s crowd. As you get further along your body becomes more adapted to expanding your lungs, though you will still cough some afterwards, up to three months out. By the end of the third month you should be up to three miles.
At this stage I would not miss any days. That comes much later. By time the forth month comes around, increasing each week a quarter of mile at a time, so you should be hitting that 4-mile marker around the first or second week in the month. Of course you adjust if you are very much over weight and you should inform your doctor as well. I easily lost ten pounds when I started.
Now you can be proud of yourself. I am of you! You have graduated from being in the beginning runners crowd to a full fledge 4-miler in four months! It wasn’t until a year or so before I became interested in races. Though you may never; there is nothing wrong with that. You can be a runner just to reap the benefits of running. It will keep the weight off and you’ll have minimum colds and flue! Plus, it has been well documented that running adds years to your life and a little less than 3% of world population can run over three miles.

37. Home Business or Desire
One morning my neighbor and I were setting on the porch with tea after our morning run. Lisa asked me candid what did I get out of all that running? She said, if she could become as self-disciplined as much as me, she felt she could accomplish starting a home based business she kept putting off. I said, you can, anyone can if they dig deep enough and find it within themselves. I said anything in the business world could be learned. What you can't learn has to come from “within yourself.” And, that is the will to succeed, to accomplish, to not stop whatever the cost, to not give up. You’re burning core-desire. There is so many false hopes in the work-at-home craze! It won’t be easy! Just make sure you want it bad enough! I had been a distance runner since my late 30s. So that is, what I did do. Transform the road warrior passion into a home business network marketing industry. Once I decided a work-at-home business was my next mission; I set my sites to focus on the unstoppable. If the readers of this article can master the recipe given with the ingredients told, they will obtain the true magic of articles. It will be no different than that of baking a cake or pie or cookies. Now this sounds easier than it does, but I warn you there are thousands who can not follow the instructions of a recipe book?

My uncle can not and my next door neighbor can not. If the truth be told, they could not boil water! However, for those of us that can, success is just around the corner with articles as your vehicle to internet success will soon come true.

One of my favorite subjects is on how I came to be a network marketer. One reason it's one of my favorites is because I'm the worst case there ever was of when-to-do-it! When is the best time to make your move? How are you going to tell your boss? How are you going to tell your wife? What can you say when your not happy with the $75,000 a year job? Of course the amount is not important. It could be $25,000 a year or $180,000 a year.
The important thing is it's just not you. You're always working for someone else. There is always a ceiling on the dollar amount. You're not calling the shots. How many times have you had to bite your cheek; I better not say anything or I might get fired! My mistake to me was I waited too long. I felt I would wait until the time was right! I wish I had not waited until twenty-five years later, instead of a couple.
I'll mention a few lines here just in case you had not heard my story. I'm sure it's floating around on the internet somewhere. But, anyway. I quit high school at the age of 15 and ran off to Sunland Park a racetrack in El Paso Texas. Now mind you that was a long way from Dallas Texas. You know, just a kid, it could have been just as well the circus or board a ship to be a sailor, or be a rock star, but whatever, it's what I decided to do! And, no one the face of the earth could change my mind once I decide I'm going to do something. How do you say it? Hard heads!
I rode up until I was about twenty-six. When I started I weighed about 95 pounds. I was a late bloomer just one to not finish growing until a later age. It just got to where I couldn't make weight any longer. Then, they came out with digital scales making it harder and harder to cheat. You know the finger by the hip trick!
I was what you call a free-lance jockey. I didn't just ride for one stable. I rode for many. I never wanted to be tied to just one stable. One source of income. My checks came from eight to twenty or more different sources. If I and a trainer didn't see eye-to-eye about something, it wouldn't break the bank. I hand my exercise-money coming in. Some jockey's thought they were too good to exercise day mounts. They just rode the races. Then I had my race checks coming in. I also did a lot of off the main racetrack circuits at training farms. Breaking the yearlings and two-year olds getting the young ones ready for the racetracks.
This was another bad habit of mine that the injuries have came back to haunt me in later years. I would always ride the crazy's, the mounts that no one else would ride. One to not not have very good sense (me). Go find that Coop guy, that's what they called me. He'll ride anything!
One thing I did do is to prepare myself for another occupation because I knew I would not always be able to ride. One winter I took up a technician school for the day I could no longer ride. The only problem is, there is a limit to how much you can make. There are, just so many hours in a day.
So as a young man I knew to have your income coming from multiple sources. I was far more a better businessman then. What happened to my own theory? Well, listening to other people and not doing my own passion. Of course I can no longer ride. But, it took me more than twenty-five years to come back around to what I want to do!
In network marketing, another jungle in itself, but with specialized knowledge it can be learned. And, there is no limit to your income. You can take any hobby or skill or art or whatever! There is a way to turn, that to income. I myself, the absolute worst at writing, see what I mean? It gets better with practice.
